EMPOWERING women is not meant for the sake of women alone, but for the overall development of a society. That is why every actor working for the good of the community should primarily target women. However, the ages old cultural, traditional and religious related gender differences remain to be the impediments that are holding-off women empowerment and the realization of women equality. What so ever the reason might be, without improving the overall conditions of women no meaningful development could ever be achieved. Efforts that neglect women who constitute about 50% of the population are futile, that will bring little, if at all, improvement in the wellbeing of the people. It is well recognized that women themselves should own and play leading role in empowering women and they should organize themselves to fight for the respect of their rights. The Women’s Association of Tigray, a women based mass association with over 713,000 members was established to mobilize and rally women under its umbrella to work for their rights and wellbeing. Empowering its members being its core aim, the Association has engaged itself in a wide areas of sectors that are affecting women’s livelihood. On this occasion mentioning the worthiness of the support of donors and partners is important as their contribution to the efforts of the Association in empowering its members specifically and the community in general has been crucial. The financial support of Irish Aid, support from the Development Fund of Norway (DF) and FOCUS has been very essential in building its institutional capacity while the contribution in the economic empowerment of women both through their contribution for skill development training of women and provision of seed money has been commendable. Kinder Unserer Welt (KUW) of Germany has been our prominent partner in Western and North Western zones of Tigray through its decade long support for the skill development trainings and provision of startup capital targeting poor women and young girls which the improvement they are bringing in their livelihood is remarkable. The support from UNICEF targeting hundreds of destitute mothers to help build sustainable means of livelihood was also very important intervention. Illiteracy is another impediment in women empowerment. In this regard DVV/IWEP’s support was very important in reducing the problem by integrating literacy and numeracy programs to the livelihood and business skill development of women. Maternal and child health is another key area of concern whereby support to strengthening the linkage of the health extension systems and women development groups (WDGs) has become evident. The partnership with the JSI/L10K project proved to be very essential in doing so. Decreasing violence against women (VAW) is another focus area the Association is engaged on. While raising the awareness level of all concerned bodies and the community are important, enlisting community activists and volunteers to say “NO! to GBV” is a creative way of engaging men as well in the fight against GBV with the support of CSSP/SASA!. The financial support provided by CSSP to reduce harmful traditional practices (HTPs) in areas where the tradition is widely practiced is also worth mentioning. Similarly the collaborative work with the National Coalition of Women against HIV/AIDS and Women Federation on the above issue is exemplary. Moreover, the support extended from Tigray Bureau of Health/Global Fund is very important tool for the Association in its fight to curb the spread of HIV/AIDS in the region as this has enabled us WAT to reach to more vulnerable women and stay safe. While many projects are sector specific, the support of the Basque Government has enabled us to implement an integrated project that are addressing issues that are pertinent to multiple sectors. Because of the prolonged drought situation encountered in the Raya Azebo district, the Association has decided and entered itself into humanitarian and emergency response as the effects of the drought is much felt by women. The support of Oxfam America in this regard has enabled not only to reduce the immediate burden of the drought by filling the food need gaps but also its longer-term impacts and minimize the risk of losing their livelihood assets. The micro-dams constructed in the same district with the joint funding of the Regional Government, Oxfam America and WAT have improved access to safe water both to the local community and their livestock assets. Lastly, the financial support of the Embassy of Japan for the undergoing construction of Keshi Gebru Primary School is enabling the Association to contribute in improving the quality of education and in attaining the “From das to class’ motto of the regional government. All in all, this is to thank and acknowledge all our partners and donors that your support is making a difference and still Women’s Association of Tigray is committed to strengthen its partnership and work with you all.
